Congrats on the new ink!
To make sure your tattoo heals perfectly and stays vibrant, follow these simple steps.
🛡️ Bandage Removal
How you care for your tattoo in the first 24–48 hours depends on
which bandage your artist used:
Option 1: The Traditional Pad (Absorbent Wrap)
highly absorbent sheets used to protect fresh tattoos, absorb excess plasma/ink, and prevent scabbing
-
When to remove: after your session, Keep it 4–8 hours, or overnight.
-
How to remove: Gently peel off the tape. If the pad sticks to the skin, dampen it slightly with lukewarm water until it slides off easily.
Option 2: Second Skin (Clear Adhesive Film)
-
When to remove: Leave the first piece on for 24 hours.
Note: It is normal to see "ink sacs" (a buildup of fluid) under the film.
-
How to remove: Peel it back slowly under running lukewarm water or in the shower. Pull the film out and away from yourself (like a Command strip) rather than pulling it straight up.
🧼 Cleaning & Routine
Once the bandage is off, follow this routine for the next 2–3 weeks:
-
Wash: Use your clean fingertips and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold or Neutrogena). Gently wash away any plasma or dried blood.
-
Dry: Pat dry gently with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
-
Moisturize: Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free lotion (coconut oil or palmer's cocoa butter) or a specific tattoo balm. Your skin should look hydrated, not greasy.
-
Repeat: Wash and moisturize 2 times a day.
🚫 The "Do Not" List
-
DO NOT pick or scratch at scabs or peeling skin.
-
DO NOT soak in water (no baths, pools, hot tubs, or lakes)
-
for at least 2 weeks. Showers are fine!
-
DO NOT expose the tattoo to direct sunlight while healing.
-
DO NOT wear tight, restrictive clothing over the fresh tattoo.
